The best six doctors anywhere and no one can deny it are sunshine, water, rest, air, exercise and diet.”-Wayne Fields
My Wellness journey started after I had my son. I noticed that I had an unhealthy relationship with food. I was an emotional eater. I would eat when I was bored, when I was sad, angry, etc. Very unhealthy patterns developed around the comfort of food. Leading me to have an at risk pregnancy and gaining over 60 pounds. I weighed 234 after I had my son, that is considered Obese for my height. No matter how many times people told me I didn’t look like I weighed that much, I knew I was unhealthy.
As I grew in motherhood, I realized that I wanted to be able to play and run after my son. I also wanted to lose the baby weight and get back to feeling like myself again. So, I started to research food. I was so shocked at the knowledge I obtained educating myself on wellness, nutrition, and inflammatory foods.
That lit a fire inside of me for the past 3 years to take my health back! I realized that food can be poison or medicine. I started researching a lot of natural remedies and whole food recipes. I even went vegan for six months; and I just want to say eating a whole food, plant based diet really will make you feel and look amazing! I am not a vegan-yet. I desire to make the full transition one day but I would be lying if I said I still didn’t enjoy crab, fish, lobster and eggs. Those are literally the only foods holding me from committing 100%. When I first began my Jamaican delicacies were hard to resist; like oxtails. * Insert struggle face* But with lots of prayer and discipline, I was able to curve it.
Currently my diet is a mix of vegan meals and pescatarian meals. Some days I find myself not eating ANY seafood or faux vegan meat. I’ve learned to stay away from processed vegan food and processed foods in general. In all honesty, as much as we may enjoy some processed foods, they are just not good for us. I know a lot of my Instagram friends asked me what I eat or what did I let go of. So here is a brief list of all the foods I cut out my diet to get to where I am now:
- Dairy (Eggs in moderation are the only thing left here for me)
- Meat (Red meat, chicken, beef, poultry)
- Bread (I Maybe eat naan bread every once in a while as a cheat)
- Packaged or bottled Juice
- Refined flour, white flour
- White rice
- Refined & Artificial sugars/sweeteners
- Soda (Never really been a fan)
- Candy (This was a struggle!)
- Milk chocolate
Now cutting these foods out of my diet wasn’t easy. I realized that I had an addiction to sugar and bread and that all it was doing was making me fatter and more unhealthy. (And guys, there’s always a swap for a healthier whole food version of the “bad stuff”.) I then went on a journey learning what to replace these foods with so I wouldn’t be tempted to run back to them for comfort and feel sick to my stomach after. Here is a brief list of some of the foods I replaced them with:
- Almond Milk
- Nutritional yeast and vegan cheese
- Plant based “meat” or veggie burgers (made from scratch or minimal processing in the frozen aisle.)
- Almond flour, Siete brand products made with Almond or Coconut flour
- Sparkling water-Any flavor
- Cauliflower rice
- Monk fruit sweetener, coconut sugar
- Fruit low in sugar
- Pitted Medjool Dates
- Dark chocolate with almonds made with stevia or monk fruit
- Bottom line: Monk fruit sweetener is the truth! Get you some!
Ever since I cut those foods out of my diet my skin has cleared and I was able to take my health back and lose almost 100 pounds in the process! I’m very close to my goal weight of 134! Diet plays a major role in weight loss but I also spent a lot of time in the gym lifting weights and doing some cardio. Don’t forget, peace, rest, sunshine and joy are also apart of wellness. All of those were developed, and are still constantly being worked on as well in this process. Here are few before and after pics for inspiration! I hope this helps someone on their journey to health and wellness!
Disclaimer: I am not an expert, I am only sharing my journey. I did not use diet pills, surgery or any other products to obtain my results. This is all hard work and grit. I am also not perfect and have failed with snacking, eating junk, etc and fluctuated many times on this journey. It’s called a journey for a reason. So have some grace with yourself! 🙂
