4 major things that help me lose weight after baby

I get ALOT of questions on how I managed to lose 75lbs after I had my son. Here I’m going to share a few tips with you on what got me started and how I stay motivated.

First I want to say losing weight is not easy, it takes determination, sacrifice and CONSISTENCY. Also as a disclaimer, I am not a personal trainer or expert in this area, I am only sharing what has worked for me. Everyone’s weight loss journey is different so you have to do what works best for you!

  1. Start small and stay consistent

One of the first things I started to do when I decided to focus on losing weight was make small changes. I knew that I didn’t want to jump into this process head first, full speed ahead because I did not want to “yo-yo diet” and fail. I wanted to make a lifestyle change. The first thing I started to do was walk  a couple miles a day with my son in his stroller. This gave me fresh air and peace as a new mommy but also gave me motivation to keep going when I started to see small results. I also decided to go vegan for a couple of months to see the transformation in my body and how my body responded to it. I felt great and realized that eating clean (organic) was best for my body even if I didn’t choose to stay vegan forever. (which I haven’t, I’m about 90% vegan/vegetarian but I still eat seafood twice a week) This works for me right now. My main point here is EAT CLEAN! (No processed foods) Food is 90% of the battle with weight loss.

2. HIIT Cardio & lifting weights

High Intensity Interval training cardio is my favorite. It can be exhausting and a pain at times but it is thee  most effective way to lose weight and keep calories burning throughout the day. You are also sculpting and toning your body when you add in many different reps of these exercises coupled with lifting weights. If you do cardio without lifting you will lose weight but you wont really tone up or build muscle. You can lose your curves this way and also become “skinny fat”. Which is a nice way to say small and not toned. Or smaller with a flabby body. My aim is to be toned and to lose all the baby weight. This way has proved highly effective in getting the results I desire!

3. Eliminate processed/refined sugar and added sugars

Sugar is your number 1 enemy to losing weight. ESPECIALLY belly fat! Sugar is in almost everything and consuming too many carbs turns into sugar in your body when digested. Crazy! I only consume products that have natural sugar in them. For example fruit has natural sugar in them. These are the good sugars that have not been refined or processed. READ YOUR LABELS. The nutrition facts on the back of products will let you know if something you are buying contains added sugars or not. I use coconut sugar which is unrefined, honey and sometimes unrefined cane sugar to sweeten things if needed.  I also watch how many grams I use. I try my best to only get sugar from fruits or coconut water with no added sugar. I only drink water and kombucha (probiotic tea). Juice is the enemy in weight loss unless you are making a smoothie or juicing without added sugars. Most fruit juice has so many unnecessary grams of added sugar, it doesn’t quench your thirst but makes you thirstier. It also has a ridiculous amount of calories in it. Don’t drink your calories! I’m very particular about this especially when it comes to my son because I do not want  him to be full of refined sugar and high fructose corn syrup.

4. Find something that motivates you

Motivation for me came from so many avenues. One, I want to live as long as the Lord allows and to run around with my son and play with him without getting tired fast. My son is my heart beat and I wanted to be able to do anything he asked of me. When I was pregnant I was at my heaviest in my life, I had high blood pressure and was considered high risk towards the end of my pregnancy. Second, I have a old picture of myself when I was at a satisfied weight and I keep it on my mirror as my goal. I read stories online and browse Instagram and gain so much motivation from other moms who are in my same predicament. We don’t want to accept the popular notion that you completely lose your body after kids. You don’t have to if you put the hard work in. I’m literally almost in better shape than I was in high school, AFTER baby. No surgery, fads, pills or personal trainers used. (Nothing against trainers because If I could afford one I probably would get one lol) That’s another motivating factor, I knew all I had was grit a gym membership and at home workout gear. I knew I had to be self motivated within my circumstances. Another motivating factor was seeing family members suffering with their health, dependent on taking pills and having unfortunate medical conditions because they never valued eating clean or exercising. That was a wake up call for me. Make sure you can wake up every morning and say to yourself I am doing my best to be the BEST version of me!
